  Gaffney Dolan Funeral Home North Stonington - Charles A. McKenna, 80, beloved husband of Joan (Ford) McKenna and former school psychologist and guidance counselor at Waterford High School for 29 years, died Sunday, August 24, 2014. An educator for 38 years, Mr. McKenna worked as a guidance counselor, history teacher and assistant basketball coach at Westerly High School, Westerly, and science teacher, assistant football coach and assistant basketball coach at Biddeford High School, Biddeford, Maine. Mr. McKenna was born in Biddeford to Ella and Charles McKenna. In 1952, he graduated from Old Orchard Beach High School, Maine, and then served two years in the U.S. Army in England as a radar mechanic. He earned a B.S. in Education from the University of Maine in 1958 and married Joan Ford on July 26 of that year at St. John's Catholic Church in Bangor, Maine. Pursuing his education, he earned a master's degree in Counseling from the University of New Hampshire in 1966; a sixth-year diploma in School Psychology in 1976; and, in 1986, a diploma in Administration and Supervision from Southern Connecticut State University. In the summer, you could find Chuck at Misquamicut Beach with family, friends and beloved golden retriever Zeke, and in winter, the avid skier hit the slopes. A clever wordsmith, Chuck took great pleasure in completing the NY Times Sunday crossword puzzle every week. He was a devoted communicant of St. Thomas Moore Church in North Stonington. Mr. McKenna is survived by his wife; his son Patrick Michael McKenna, daughter-in-law Shanna and grandchildren Caitlin, Cassidy and Connor of Frisco, Texas, and grandson Ian of Jacksonville, Fla.; his daughter Colleen McKenna Marchitto and grandchildren Morgan, Mark, Brooke and Devin Marchitto of Columbia, Conn.; his son, Timothy Sean McKenna of Clinton, Conn.; and his grandchildren, Jordan, Seamus and Liam and their mother Brooke of Mystic, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Michael Ford McKenna, and a son-in-law, Mark Marchitto, as well as by his brother Walter McKenna and sister Helen McKenna Hoopes.
