Richard E. "Dick" Newman, 75, of Maple Leaf Lane, Poland, and formerly of Cold Brook, died on December 2, 2005 at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, New Hartford, following a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Richard was born in Utica on December 13, 1929, the oldest child of the late Glenn D. and Margaret (Wood) Newman. He spent his early years on the family farm in Cold Brook and received his education in local schools. In January of 1951, he entered the U.S. Army, where he served with the Paratroopers in the 11th Airborne Division during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant First Class in December of 1953.
On June 23, 1956, he was united in marriage with the former Betsy A. Autenrith at the First Baptist Church of Newport. Following their marriage, they resided in West Winfield for four years, then moved to Cold Brook and to their present home in Poland in 2002.
In his earlier years, Dick worked as a farmer, painter, auto mechanic and at the Jamestown Veneer Mill, formerly of Poland. In 1967, he purchased the Town Tavern in Newport, which he operated for 38 years until selling his business this past September. In addition, he worked for 15 years as a chef at the former General Electric French Road Plant. Mr. Newman was a member of Adirondack Post #1118 American Legion, Cold Brook, and had bowled for the past 25 years with bowling leagues in Barneveld. Dick was an exceptional cook, a skill that he acquired from his mother and through his military service. He thoroughly enjoyed preparing meals and entertaining family and friends at his home. Richard will be remembered as a hard working man, but always found time to enjoy life to the fullest. Among his most memorable times were those spent with his family at the Newman Camp in the Town of Morehouse. He was always ready to play a game of pitch or cribbage.
Survivors besides his wife of 49 years, Betsy, include their four children and spouses, Holly and Daniel Snyder of Norway, Eric and Erna Newman of Newport, Juli and Kevin Yoworski of Wilmington, NC, and Amy and Ronald Salm of Newport; 16 grandchildren, Dan, Nolan and Justin Snyder, Lisa Lynch, Eric II, Kelcy, Ryan and Kara Newman, Amanda, Hayden, Joel and Abby Yoworski and Kaleigh, Erica, Rebecca and Janelle Salm; six sisters, Joan Tobin of Dolgeville, Pat Brown of Bridgewater, Sally Truax, Judy Newman and Carol Young, all of Cold Brook, and Cindy Fitzgerald of Utica; three brothers, Dean of Middleville, James of CT and Dale of Cold Brook; two aunts; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves his in-laws and many nieces and nephews of the Autenrith family. Dick was predeceased by his brother, Robert, in 1998.
