- Beverly and Don Lapoint were placed in foster care as young children because of the instability oftheir parents home. Apparently Gladys, her mother, was mentally ill and occasionally hospitalized and her father was alcoholic. Beverly was placed with a family named Simons who lived in Binghamton and refused to ever return Beverly to her parents. Beverly always avoided contact with her parents because Mrs. Simons told her that they were awful. She was afraid of her father because he was a foul mouthed drunk. She did not know when her parents divorced or died until she found her brother.
Don tended to defend the parents and always insisted that his father had routinely sent support money to Mrs. Simons, however Mrs. Simons always told Beverly how expensive it was to care for her and how her family did nothing to help. Beverly always felt obligated to pay her foster mother for her room and board and anything she received. She even quit school to work so she could pay her foster mother. Eventually she joined the Air Force and got away from the difficult influence of the step mother.
Her husband, whom she met in the Air Force, was like her father, a foul mouthed drunk. They divorced, but later remarried.
Cheri Clevenger, Beverly's daughter, says that Beverly fussed repeatedly about being alone in the world with no family, so Cheri decided to try to locate Beverly's brother, Donald. She called the Syracuse information number for Donald Leroy LaPoint and got through to him right away. He hung up on Cheri twice because he had been bothered previously by another woman from Syracuse, NY named Beverly LaPoint who had been troublesome. After he learned who she was he came to Washington 7 days later to see her after no contact for 28 years. He had not known her married name or where she lived and was waiting for her to contact him.
