William "Bill" O. Meeks, Jr., 62, of Bryan passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2009, in Amarillo, Texas, after suffering a brain aneurism and cardiac arrest while traveling to Denver.
Bill was born and raised in San Angelo, Texas, where he worked for the San Angelo Standard Times from 1969 to 1977. He was well known in the Bryan/College Station area as the chief photographer at The Eagle from 1977 to 1995 and as an independent photographer. After he resigned from The Eagle to develop his photography business, especially weddings, he continued to do freelance work for The Eagle, The Associated Press, The Dallas Morning News, Houston Chronicle, USA Today, Texas A&M University, Bryan and College Station city governments, the local school districts, and various private enterprises. In addition to being nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 1983, he received numerous other photographic honors including being awarded First Place by the Dallas Press Club for the Dallas Katie, 1990 Newspaper Award, First Place by Austin Headliners, 1990 Newspaper Award (presented by former Texas Governor, Ann Richards), 2 newspaper Addy Awards in 1988 (including the 1988 Addy Sweepstakes Award), and numerous Harte Hanks newspaper awards. He photographed six U.S. Presidents and numerous other celebrities. Bill was known for his Christian witness, his great sense of humor, and his gardening abilities sharing tomatoes with numerous friends and acquaintances.
Survivors include his wife, Judy; daughter, Alenda Lara, of Bryan, her husband, Arthur and their 3 children; son, William O. Meeks III, of Norman, Oklahoma, and his 2 children; 2 step-sons, Travis Lively, of College Station, his wife Jana and their 3 children and Calder Lively, of College Station, his wife, Bobbie-Jill and their daughter; his sister, Nora Lann of Uvalde, her husband, Ned and their 3 children and his brother, Joe Paul Meeks of Tyler, his wife, Belinda and their 2 children.
