MARY ELIZABETH BARKEY (nee Bradley), 72, of Cleveland Hts. passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 6.
Preceded in death by parents Vera Marie (Rahe) and Harry Aiken Bradley.
Survived by beloved husband, John "Jack"; daughters, Jeanne (Ann Follett), Cheryl (David Sullivan), and Nanette (Hilton Vascon-celos): grandchildren, Julian and Amina; brother, John (Vivian) Bradley; sisters, Nancy (Dick) Morrow, Ann (Vern) Davitt, and Harriet (Gordon) Friday; many dear nieces and nephews.
Mary will also be deeply missed by friends, colleagues, and her church family. Born and raised in Des Moines, IA, Mary received a BA in Early Childhood Development at the University of Nebraska, where she also met John. She later received an MA in Counseling and Human Services from John Carroll University. In 1980, she found a special calling in the Child Life Dept. at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, where she worked through 2007. Mary saw new possibilities in caring for children undergoing stressful procedures and began applying her ever-practical ingenuity. Over time, innovative methods she and the late Barbara Stephens developed became known as "Comfort Measures", which have been adopted by hospitals nationally and internationally. Mary served on the national board of the Child Life Council, and in 2007 was honored with the RB&C Foundation Trustee Award for Clinical Excellence. Mary loved to travel. She volunteered with Operation Smile in Brazil and India, and visited Europe, Africa and China on family trips. Close to home and far away, she gave personal and paren-ting support to many. Mary always loved music and singing, spending time with friends, working for peace and justice, and watching sunsets.
