The Rev. C. Julian Bartlett, former dean of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, died Thursday at his home in Portola Valley, Calif. He was 78.
The Rev. Bartlett was born in New Orleans and lived in Portola for many years. He received a doctorate of divinity degree from the Church of Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, Calif., and a bachelor's degree in engineering from Tulane University. He was ordained an Episcopal minister in 1948 and served as associate pastor of St. Paul's Church in New Orleans. He was dean of Grace Cathedral from 1956 to 1976. The Rev. Bartlett was noted for his work in behalf of social justice and was a leading proponent of the ordination of women in the Episcopal Church. During World War II, the Rev. Bartlett was president of his family's company, Bartlett Chemicals of New Orleans. He also was a member of the Coast Guard at that time. He was a member of the Boston Club and a former member of the Tulane University Board of Visitors.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Merrill Goodfellow Bartlett; two sons, Aubrey Bartlett II and Oliver Bartlett; a daughter, Jeanne B. Kerr; two stepsons, Geoffrey and Winston Goodfellow; a brother, Walter M. Bartlett; two sisters, Lummie Irwin and Nellie May Kelleher; and five grandchildren.
