HOUSTON | Donald E. York, 89, formerly of Mesa, Arizona, and Rapid City, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 26, 2012, in the presence of those he loved, from complications of a stroke.
Don was born on March 31, 1923, in Mitchell, S.D. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Pearl York, and his great grandson, Rein Henderson.
He was raised in rural South Dakota by his grandparents when his mother passed away from tuberculosis when Don was at the early age of ten. A product of the Great Depression, Don valiantly served his country for four years during WWII, storming Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He attained the rank of sergeant and was with the 112th Engineer Combat Battalion.
He returned to Mitchell after the war and married his sweetheart Sally Lucas on June 19, 1946.
Together they raised their family. He began a rewarding 66 year career with New York Life Insurance as an agent, and then serving as General Manager in Midland, TX, Houston, TX, and Rapid City, SD. Retiring from management in 1982, he again represented New York Life as an agent. Even with no college education, through dedication and hard work he was very successful. He continued to represent New York Life Insurance until just prior to his death.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Sally; his two daughters, Cheri Hartford and husband Greg, Jane Dillingham and husband David; grandchildren, Todd and Taylor Dillingham, Kimberly Bozeman and husband Rick, Andrew Hartford, JB Hartford, and Corey Hartford and wife Stevie; and three great-grandchildren, Jake and Josh Bozeman and Jessica Hartford.
Don thoroughly enjoyed his life, had no regrets, and found great happiness with his family and in his work. He had a wonderful sense of humor, loved talking on the telephone, and following all sports. He loved his horses and animals. He loved people and had many life-long friends. His family finds great comfort knowing that Don is now and forever at peace in the presence of his Lord Jesus Christ.
