Elsie A. Phillips, 93, of Shirley Mills, widow of Daniel Phillips, died Monday at her home.
She was born in West Gouldsboro, a daughter of Harry P. and Elizabeth S. Sergant, and graduated from Bangor High School in 1925 while working and boarding in the Bangor area. In 1928, she graduated from Eastern Maine Normal School, where she was known as "Deac."
Mrs. Phillips took her first teaching position in Norcross, then a settlement on a railroad siding. She taught the following year in Chesuncook Village, taking her first trip there in a 30-foot freight canoe. Her experiences with the people there were some of her most memorable, and she spoke often of the wonderful relationships she enjoyed with both students and adults.
At the end of that school year, she came to Greenville and taught in Shirley Mills. She also met her husband of 50 years.
Years later, she moved with her family to Framingham, Mass., and lived there for 34 years. She then returned to the home in Shirley Mills where she began her married life, and renewed old friendships while building new ones.
Surviving are two sons, Allen H. Phillips of Falmouth and Richard F. Phillips of New Point, Va.; a sister, Margaret A. Blaisdell of West Gouldsboro; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
