Kenneth E. Sayward, 84
GRAY -- Kenneth, fondly known as 'PA' to his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family, was born on the family homestead 'Grandview Farm' (Dutton Hill Road) now Center Road in Gray, to Henry and Iva (Chipman) Sayward on June 20, 1927.
He passed peacefully at the Barron Center Monday, March 12th after a brief stay.
Kenneth worked many long hours caring for a variety of animals, but his favorite would be the many pair of oxen he raised. His family recalls the use of oxen to hay their fields with a pitch fork and the hay wagon drawn by Star and Line. He graduated from Pennell Institute in 1945. His primary employer was Burnham & Morrill in Portland where he worked nights for 33 years before retiring in 1992. Kenneth enjoyed his retirement by taking his love of farming and animals, becoming an active lifetime member of the annual Cumberland Fair Association. He volunteered, served as a judge at the ox pulls and donated the 'Sayward Ferrier' building from Grandview Farm as a lasting historical preservation of agriculture in Maine. He traveled to Nova Scotia to serve as an official at the International Ox pulls. He was an avid Boston Celtics and Red Sox fan.
Kenneth married the former Muriel E. Brown on August 24, 1947. They spent 64 years building wonderful memories we will all cherish.
He is survived by his wife Muriel; his two daughters Kathleen Collins of Gray, Iva Carroll and her husband Donnell, also of Gray; three grandchildren Keith Collins and his wife Christine of Gray, Tara Back and her husband Aron of Norwalk, Conn. and Neil Carroll and his wife Amanda of Gray; four beautiful great-granddaughters Lillian Back and Emily Carroll, who inherited their great-grandfather's sky blue eyes, Molly Carroll, and Olivia Back; a sister Rita Giblin of El Cajon, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews; and his loyal, soul companion 'Pommey' (you rarely found him without the dog on his lap).
