LUNENBURG - , passed peacefully at his home on Friday, Dec. 10, 2010.
Henry was born in Memphis, Tenn., on Jan. 8, 1927, a son of the late Percy and Claire (Hamlett) Root.
His family moved to Jackson, Mississippi in 1929. Henry attended school in Jackson and began work in radio broadcasting as a licensed engineer at the age of 16, in 1943. He joined the U.S. Navy in December 1944 during World War II. In service, he worked on radio, radar and sonar equipment as an electronic technician.
In late-1945, Henry was assigned to a destroyer, the Wilson DD847, which was being built at the Bath Ironworks in Bath, Maine. It was in Bath that he met his future wife, Claire Martin. He went to sea in the Atlantic in early-1946, and later that year returned to civilian life. He returned to radio broadcasting at WJDX in Jackson, Miss.
In September 1947, Henry accepted a job at now radio station WLAM in Lewiston, Maine. He married Claire on July 30, 1949. In 1953, at the age of 26, he became one of the youngest chief engineers for both radio and television. He accepted a job at MIT's Lincoln Laboratory in 1956. In 1962, he joined General Telephone & Electronics as a senior engineer and ascended to advanced engineering specialist before retiring in 1991 at age 64.
Henry was an avid photographer, an amateur radio enthusiast, and was fluent in French.
He leaves his wife of 61 years, Claire; his son Jeff Root and his wife Diane of Westminster; his daughter Julie and her husband Scott Sawyer of South Deerfield; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He also leaves five brothers, Gene, Joe, Percy Jr., Jon and Jack; and three sisters Martha Baker, Ruth Benton and Betty Root.
He was predeceased by his twin brother, Ben in 2005.
