Robert Guyer Porter,79, Of Wenham and formerly of Beverly who leaves a daughter In Harwich Port, died unexpectedly Sept. 27 while vacationing In Vermont.
He was the husband Of Anne Conary for 58 years.
Mr. Porter attended Beverly High School And graduated from Huntington School In 1940. He also attended the Tufts V-12 program And graduated from Northeastern University with a bachelor of science In electrical engineering In 1944. He was a World War II Navy veteran. After the war, Mr. Porter began his engineering career with New England Telephone & Telegraph In 1946, where he remained for 35 years. During this time, he was responsible for the first mobile and paging systems. Later, he was one of the first engineers In New England to go into marketing and became general marketing manager for business services. He helped establish the Massachusetts Institute of Massachusetts' first online computer. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical And Electronics Engineers Inc. Having lived In Wenham for 58 years, Mr., Porter had an intense commitment to the town. He was credited for writing the first building codes In the 1950s. He also served on the planning board for 17 years And as captain of the Auxiliary Fire Department for 13 years. He was a member of the Iron Rail Purchase Committee In the 1970s And chaired the cable TV advisory board. He spent a year working on installing computers In town hall. Mr. Porter was involved with the Hamilton-Wenham Emergency Operations Board, helping establish the emergency center. Mr. Porter felt a strong sense of personal pride and satisfaction knowing his effort was giving back something as important as saving lives In his community. He was still the one charged with preparing the budget for the center each year In 1998, Mr. Porter received the Rotary Club's Rae Scott Community Service Award for his service to the two towns.
For the past 20 years Of retirement, Mr. Porter was an avid gardener, accomplished photographer And traveled extensively with his wife. He also enjoyed reading, writing And researching his genealogy. His family roots extended back In the area to the 1600s.
Besides his wife, survivors include a daughter, Judith Anne Howard Of Harwich Port; And four grandchildren.
