Richard B. Haskell of West Hartford, passed away on Thursday, (September 11, 2008) in Simsbury. He was born in Holyoke, MA on June 29, 1912, and moved to West Hartford from Westfield, MA in January 1948.
He was married for 37 years to Kathleen P. Renison of Springfield, MA who died in 1976. He remarried in 1977 to a former high school classmate, Clare Manning Hobert of Holyoke, MA who died in 1989.
Mr. Haskell graduated from Holyoke, High School in 1929 and earned a B.A. degree from Duke University in 1933. A veteran of World War II, he entered the U.S. Air Force in 1942 as a 2nd Lieutenant and was separated as a Captain in 1945. He served in the Mediterranean Theatre and received a Bronze Star for Meritorious Service.
Mr. Haskell is survived by a son, R. Bruce Haskell; a daughter-in-law, Heide of Mahwah, NJ; a grand-daughter, Christine Audrey Haskell of Seattle, WA; a grand-daughter, Haley Kay Edwards of Arlington, VA; a daughter, Linda May Haskell of Los Altos, CA; and a son, R. Scott Haskell; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Van Vleck Haskell; and two grandsons, Joseph Scott Haskell and James Van Vleck Haskell, all of Needham, MA.
Mr. Haskell started his business career in 1933 as a clerk with the Union Trust Co. of Springfield, MA. He joined Kidder, Peabody, and Co. in 1935 as a sale representative and left there in 1938 to become associated with Woronoco Savings Bank of Westfield, MA where he became its President in 1945, after separation from the Air Force. He left Westfield in 1948 to join Mechanics Savings Bank in Hartford as Vice-President and Treasurer, becoming its President in 1955 and Chairman in 1973. He retired from Mechanics Savings Bank in 1977. Mr. Haskell had been otherwise active in the business and financial world. He served as President of the Savings Banks Association of Connecticut, President of the National Association of Savings Banks in New York and Washington, and as Connecticut Vice President of the American Bankers Association. He had been on the Boards of Directors of Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Co., National Fire Insurance Co., Transcontinental Insurance Co. of New York, Phoenix Mutual Investment Co., Phoenix Capital Fund, Inc., United Bank & Trust Co., Northeast Utilities, The Fund for Mutual Depositors in New York, The Coca Cola Bottling Company of Southern New England, The Investors Mortgage Insurance Co. of Boston and the Tiger Insurance Group, Inc. of Boston.
In addition, he had served on several local and national committees involved in banking, mortgage, and financial affairs in Connecticut, Washington, and New York. Mr. Haskell was active with many civic and charitable organizations. He had served in the Budget Committee of the Greater Hartford Community Chest, was Chairman of the Community Chest Campaign in 1964 and President in 1966. He also served as President of the Greater Hartford Chamber of Commerce from 1957-59 during the early stages of Hartford Redevelop and made a presentation in Miami, FL that brought the All-America Cities Award to Hartford in the early 1960's. He was Chairman of the Committee for Hartford in 1960. He was on the Board of the Greater Hartford Y.M.C.A. and served as its President from 1961-64. He had served as a Director on the Boards of the Governmental Research Institute, Junior Achievement of Hartford, the Greater Hartford Housing Development Fund, Mount Sinai Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, The Institute of Living, the Boys' Club of Hartford, and Kingswood School. He was a Regent at the University of Hartford and an Associate Trustee of Saint Joseph College. He was a corporator at Hartford Hospital, the American School for the Deaf, the Connecticut Institute for the Blind, and the Health Care Facilities Planning Council for Greater Hartford, Inc. He has been recognized in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Business and Industry and received awards as the Junior Chamber of Commerce Boss of the Year in 1960, the Greater Hartford Chamber of Commerce Charter Oak Leadership Medal in 1961, the Greater Hartford Community Chest Citizens of The Year Award in 1968, and the Y.M.C.A. of Metropolitan Hartford Distinguished Leadership Award in 1982. He has been a member of the Hartford Club, The Hartford Golf Club, The Economic Club of New York, The Twentieth Century Club, and the Old Guard of West Hartford.
