Msgr. James D. Cuffney, 80, pastor emeritus of St. Mary's Church, died Saturday in Auburn Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Sonyea, the son of James L. and Mildred Westcott Cuffney, he attended Haverling High School in Bath and St. Andrews and St. Bernard's seminaries in Rochester. Cuffney was ordained to the priesthood June 15, 1935 and celebrated his first mass the following day in St. Mary's Church, Bath, where he spent his childhood years.
He then served as an assistant pastor at St. Thomas Apostle Church in Irondequoit from 1935 until 1940, St. Mary's Church in Auburn from 1940 to 1941, St. Patrick's Church in Seneca Falls from 1941 to 1947 and St. Mary's Church in Canandaigua from 1947 to 1948, when he was appointed procurator of St. Bernard's Seminary. The following year, Pope Pius XII appointed him a papal chamberlain. Cuffney was then named pastor of St. Mary's Church in June 1958, serving until his retirement in August 1979. The late Pope John XIII elevated him to domestic prelate following his appointment as pastor with the title of Rt. Rev. Msgr. He resided at 5 Letchworth Ave.
Surviving are three brothers, William P. of Salinas, Calif., Francis T. of East Aurora and Robert V. of Bath; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Louise Dittiacur of Delaware, Ohio, and Mrs. Margaret Reimer of Williamstown, N.J.; several nieces and nephews.
