Edwin Cochrane Ashton, age 88, of Tuscaloosa, died Nov. 9, 2006 at Larocca Nursing Home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin Cochrane Ashton, Sr. and Ethel Babbitt Ashton, his sister, Dorothy Ashton, his brother, Earle Ashton and his wife, Cecilia Welbury Ashton.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Pace Ashton; son, David Welbury Ashton (Susan) of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; daughters, Dolly Ashton O?Neal (Bert) of Birmingham and Barbara Ashton Nicol (Robert) of Tuscaloosa; stepdaughters, Pamela Pace Lackey (Gary) of Elgin, S.C. and Wanda Pace Campbell of Birmingham; grandchildren, Bertrand Clarke O?Neal, Jr., Edwin Camper O?Neal, Amelia Ashton O?Neal, Christopher Scott Schiller, Benjamin Ashton Schiller, Sage Monnish Nicol, Robinson Prince Nicol and Lindsey Marie Campbell.
Mr. Ashton was born November 1, 1918 in Media, Pa. He graduated from The Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades in Media in 1939 and went on to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He moved to Tuscaloosa in 1961 to establish Southern Heat Exchanger Corp. He was president and CEO of Southern Heat Exchanger Corp. until his retirement in 1986. He was active in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He had been a member of the Board of Trustees of The Williamson School. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church since 1962.
He loved to travel and made the 'Around the World? cruise on the Queen Elizabeth 2 ten times and 17 cruises on the Delta Queen.In 1986 he endowed the first faculty chair at The Williamson School and in 1998 he endowed the Cecilia W. Ashton nursing scholarship at Shelton State. He also assisted numerous other students in completing their education.
