Mrs. Wayne A. Talbot, 74, was summoned into Life Thursday September 10, 1953 at her home in Burlington Flats after having suffered a stroke on the previous Friday morning, from which she never fully rallied. She had been in noticeability failing health about six weeks.
Nettie Elizabeth ("Lizzie") Briggs was born in Armada, St. Clair county, Michigan on October 1, 1878, the eldest daughter of the five children of Albert Sheridan and Lucy Ann Meeker Briggs. When she was three weeks old, her parents returned to New York state, and she spent her childhood in the vicinity of West Burlington.
On her sixteenth birthday, she taught her first day of school in the Tucker District in the town of Edmeston. Later she worked as a domestic in the home of Mrs. Bert Ackerman, Edmeston.
She was married to Wayne A. Talbot of North Edmeston in her parents' home in West Burlington on November 2, 1899, the late Rev. R. W. Lowry, pastor of the Edmeston West Burlington parish officiating. Church records show that she had united with the West Burlington congregation under the ministry of the Rev. Mr. Hartsock in 1895.
After Mr. and Mrs. Talbot moved from the North Edmeston farm to the village of Burlington Flats in March, 1908, she worked as a seamstress. From 1913 to 1928 she maintained the Burlinton Flats telephone switchboard in her home, which was a tourist and boarding home also for a number of years. For many years she was correspondent for several newspapers. She had been employed as part-time postal clerk in the local office for many years.
At one time she was a leader of the Village Improvement Society, the Community Club, and was a member of the Home Bureau. Always she was a faithful and active member of her church - since 1907 the Burlington Flats Methodist church * and of its auxiliaries, and was a teacher in the Sunday school up to the time of her death.
In 1949 Mr. and Mrs. Talbot observed their Golden Wedding with an Open House.
They have one daughter, Gladys, now Mrs, W. Alfred Wietz of Rochester. One sister, Mrs. Bertha Maine of Leonardsville, survives; also five nieces, Mrs. Edwin Hewitt, Waterville; Mrs. Francis Reynolds, Mrs. George Colegrove and Mrs. William Janicki of Leonardsville; and Mrs. Fred Culley of Plattsburg; and three nephews, Laverne Maine, Leonardsville; Adrian Lashure, Whitesboro, and Donald LaShure, Utica.
