GALVA - Mary W. Talbot, 86, of Galva died at 12:33 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Seminary Manor in Galesburg. Born Sept. 10, 1917, in Decatur to John and Alice Farmer Hise, she married Joseph M. Talbot on May 28, 1939, in Galva. He died Feb. 13, 1983. She also was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Surviving are two sons, Richard (and Ruth Ann) of Galva and Kent of Rock Island; two daughters, Judy (and Tom) Cole of Louisville, Colo., and Mary Jo Petersen of Aurora, Colo.; one sister, Helen Cain of Denver; eight grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; two great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.
She attended Liberty Beauty School in Peoria. She first was a beautician in Kewanee and later owned Mary's Beauty Shop. She then worked for Galva Telephone Office from 1958 until retiring in 1982. After retiring, she was a volunteer at F.U. White School in Galva for 10 years. She also was a volunteer for the bloodmobile and Galva Library.
She was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Galva and its Altar and Rosary Society, where she held several offices over the years. She was named Diocesan Volunteer of the Year for her work at the church, craft programs and coordinating funeral luncheons. She also was a member of Galva Women's Club, Galva Arts Council and Galva Senior Citizen Center.
Burial will be in St. John Catholic Cemetery in rural Galva.
