Robert. W. Talbot, 80, of Hamilton died on Sept. 1, 2004, at his daughter's home in Missoula. He had struggled for many years with pulmonary fibrosis. Bob passed away in his sleep with his wife and daughter by his side.
He was born Feb. 8, 1924, to Otis and Virginia Talbot at the family home just one and a half miles north of Corvallis. Bob attended Corvallis schools and graduated from Corvallis High School.
During WWII, he served approximately 4 1/2 years in the United States Merchant Marines. Bob trained at the Maritime School on Catalina Island, Calif. His first berth was on the SS Geronimo at San Francisco which took him around the world via Tasmania, Sir Lanka, India, East and South Africa, Brazil and Trinidad, the Port of Spain, arriving back in the United States at New York. Bob sailed on the SS Apache to Sydney, Australia, where he attended officers training school. He then served on several ships for the Army Transportation Corps in the Pacific theater as first officer. Bob was pressed into service at the age of only 21 as captain on one of the Inter Island ships for a period of several months.
After the war ended, he married his teenage sweetheart, Vi Williams, in Fairbanks, Alaska, on July 24, 1947. Bob and Vi recently celebrated their 57th anniversary together this summer. In 1949, they were blessed with twins, Robert Jay and Sandra Kay.
They returned to the Bitterroot in 1958 where they owned and operated the local Dairy Queen. When they sold the business, they moved to Helena where Bob was employed for the next eight years as an examiner for the Montana State Superintendent of Banks. They returned to the Bitterroot in 1969 were Bob served as vice president and a member of the board of directors for Citizen's State Bank.
Bob was always very active in the community and was a past president of the Hamilton Kiwanis Club, past member of the County Tax Appeal Board and served twice as the Master of the Masonic Lodge #39 at Corvallis. He was also a member of the Bitterroot Shrine Club, the Elks Club and the Hamilton Golf Course.
In the mid 1990's, Bob sold all of his business interests and then enjoyed many years of pursuing his favorite pastimes, fishing, hunting and golf.
Preceding him in death are his son, Robert Jay Talbot; his parents, Otis and Virginia Talbot; his brother, Kenneth G. Talbot, and his sister, Florence Eddy.
Bob is survived by his wife, Vi Talbot; his daughter, Sandra Talbot, of Missoula; his grandson, Michael Kennerly, of Florida; his granddaughter, Laura Whitehead, and husband, Shane, and their daughter, Ella Rose Whitehead, of Missoula; his brother, Jack Talbot, of Seattle and his sisters, Helen Anderson of Spokane and Linda Perry of Seattle.
Bob leaves behind many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and numerous wonderful friends many of whom were his partners in hunting, fishing and golf.
