Uncasville - Richard S. Shaffer Jr., 65, of Fitch Hill Road, Uncasville, passed away at his home on Wednesday, July 20, 2005.
He was born on Sept. 12, 1939, in Montville to Richard and Gladys (Gardner) Shaffer. He married his wife, Barbara, on July 20, 1956, at All Hollows Church in Moosup. He retired from United Nuclear.
In May of 1992 the Norwich Bulletin featured Mr. Shaffer in "Profile of a Newsmaker." The feature focused on Mr. Shaffer being named Citizen of the Year by the Citizen's Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. Mr. Shaffer was a longtime advocate of the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment giving citizens the right to bear arms. He started hunting at the age of 5 and owned his own shotgun at the age of 8. Whenever local or federal lawmakers were considering a bill that would restrict the sale of guns, he would send out letters asking local politicians to reject the proposed law. Mr. Shaffer was also an active member of the National Rifle Association. Mr. Shaffer continued to fight for these rights up to his passing. Mr. Shaffer enjoyed hunting, fishing and photography.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; his son, Richard Shaffer III; his daughters, Monica Stringer, Cynthia Gladue and Dawn St.Jean; his brother, Ralph Shaffer; his sisters, Hope Wise, and Jerry MacEwan; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, including Alex and Ben Shaffe
