RHODE ISLAND AND NORWICH- Mildred E. "Millie" (Basara) Babbitt, 79, wife of the late John H. Babbitt, Sr. of Rhode Island, formerly of Williams St., left this world for her Heavenly home on Saturday evening at the John Clarke Retirement Center in Middletown, Rhode Island. Born on October 28, 1927, in Wallington, NJ, she was one of five daughters born to the late Gabriel and Anna (Kuzmiak) Basara.
Millie attended public schools in Norwich and the Norwich Free Academy. She worked for many years at the woolen mills in Taftville and Norwich. Her later years were spent working as a Bank Teller for the former Hartford National Bank. On January 25, 1947 in St. Patrick Church, she was united in marriage to John H. Babbitt, Sr., who died August 30, 1990 after 43 years of marriage. They were blessed with three children, ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Millie's greatest passion was when her family was gathered together. She also loved to crochet and bake.
Surviving is a son, John "Jack" H. Babbitt, Jr. and his wife Audrey of Windham; two daughters, Alberta Gallagher and her husband Pete of Arroyo Grande, CA and Cynthia Waterman and her husband Will of Jamestown, RI; eight grandchildren, Kristin (Gallagher) Marsalek, Heather (Babbitt) Kravet, Adam Babbitt, Daniel Babbitt, Damian Babbitt, Christopher Waterman and Stephanie Waterman; three great grandchildren, Lucy, Eli and Mary Marsalek; a sister, Doris Crawford and her husband Ron; a brotherinlaw, Bert Babbitt and his wife Mary; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband; parents; and sisters, Patricia Magowan, Olga Dawson and Ann Eaton; and two grandchildren, Meghan and Allison Gallagher.
