  The Daily Star (Oneonta, NY) May 23, 2012 WEST BURLINGTON _ Virgil Edward Zinninger, 86, went home to his Lord Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at Otsego Manor, which had been his home for the past several years. He was born on July 21, 1925, in New Berlin, the son of Luther and Claudine (Talbot) Zinninger. After graduating from Edmeston Central School he enlisted in the United States Navy. Virgil was a Sonar man Second Class on the USS Gilligan, a Destroyer Escort, in World War II in the Pacific Theater. After his discharge from the Navy in 1946, he began his long career in banking. He started at Central National Bank in Canajoharie and retired as the Branch Manager in Edmeston. Virgil was a pillar to the Edmeston-Burlington area. He was continuously concerned for the welfare of others, carried a joyous smile, a willing ear, words of encouragement and wisdom, and was considered exceedingly reliable and trustworthy. He was a member of the Edmeston Rotary, the Wharton Valley American Legion Post No. 1311, the United Methodist Church and a deacon, served at Pathfinder Village on the Board of Directors, and had been active with Meals on Wheels. His nieces, Claudia, Karen and Kathy; his cousins, Mary, Grant and his wife Fred (Debbie), and Jeanne; his three grandnieces; and one grandnephew survive Virgil. He was predeceased by his brother, William Zinninger; and sister, Virginia Slater.
