• Notes

  Providence Journal March 2, 2004 BARBARA BRIGGS, 85, of 2087 East Main Rd., a retired librarian, died yesterday at John Clarke Nursing Center, Middletown. Born in Portsmouth on Dec. 3, 1918, a daughter of the late Mervin C. and Marguerite (Holman) Briggs, she had been a lifelong resident of the town. Miss Briggs had been a librarian at Barrington College for 25 years before retiring in 1983. She later worked part-time for seven years as a research librarian at Newport Public Library. A 1936 graduate of Rogers High School and a 1940 graduate of Providence Bible Institute, which later became Barrington College, she also held a master's degree from the University of Rhode Island. She was a member of the Portsmouth Historical Society and Portsmouth Evangelical Friends Church. She leaves a brother, Ernest L. Briggs of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Frederick H. and Barclay M. Briggs.
