William Thomas Hall Sowle, 85, former Portsmouth town official and prominent Grange member, died yesterday at a Portsmouth nursing home. He made with a nephew, Mervin C. Briggs of 905 West Main Road, Portsmouth.
Born in Portsmouth, Feb 20, 1872, he was the son of Job and Lydia Corey Sowle. He was a member of the town council from 1914 to 1920; a tax commisioner from 1924 to 1948 and an overseer of the poor and commisioner of the town farm from 1918 to 1932.
Mr. Sowle was an active member of Portsmouth Grange since 1893, and was one of three surviving charter members of Newport County Ponoma Grange. A past member of both granges, he was a member of the Southeastern Rhode Island Past Masters Assn.
Burial will be in Friends cemetery, Portsmouth,
