GRACE ELLIS MAURAN, 83, of Congdon Street, an author of short stories and a former magazine editor, died Thursday at Rhode Island Hospital. She was the wife of the late Dr. William Lippitt Mauran.
Born in Greensboro, N.C., a daughter of the late Judson and Althelea Ellis, she lived in Providence for 45 years.
Mrs. Mauran attended Cambridge University in England. Her first job in the literary world was as an editor of Harpers magazine. Her work was published in Look, Colliers, Saturday Evening Post, Swanee Review, in an anthology published by Alfred Hitchcock, and, most recently, in Tales of the Fantastic, Black Water 2. Her stories were used in writing courses at Brown University.
She was an adventurous world traveler throughout her life, captaining a schooner off Nova Scotia and on occasion climbing a mountain. She was a member of the Author's Guild and an associate member of the Hope Club. She was a communicant of the Cathedral of St. John.
She leaves a son, R. Christopher A. Mauran of Conyers, Ga.; a daughter, Angela Ellis Mauran of Bethesda, Md.; a brother, Judson Ellis Jr. in California; and three grandchildren.
