JOHN J. GALLAGHER, 85, of Cape Coral, Fla., a retired commander in the Navy, died Aug. 7 at Hope Hospice, Fort Myers, Fla.
He was the husband of Elizabeth Gallagher, and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year.
Born in Rehoboth, he was a son of the late Charles E. and Annie (Fillessey) Gallagher. He lived in Swansea before joining the Navy prior to World War II.
A 1936 graduate of Brown University, he was a naval aviator and flight instructor in Memphis, Tenn., during WWII. Following the war, he resided in Alexandria, Va.
Mr. Gallagher worked in the Pentagon and for the Federal Aviation Administration in Washington, D.C., for many years before retiring in 1972.
Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Donald Gallagher, John Gallagher Jr. and Charles Gallagher, all of White Stone, Va.; a daughter, Susan Orndorff of Hanover, N.H.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was father of the late Laura Gallagher, and brother of the late Martha E. Moody and Anna M. Carty, both formerly of Riverside.
