Mr. James B. Lawton, a well known resident of Newport, died at the Newport Hospital Tuesday, after a long illness. A year ago he was compelled to give up active work and was seriously ill for some time. Recovering somewhat, he was able to be about for a while, but a few days ago he became worse and was taken to the hospital.
The deceased was a member of the Lawton family, which has been prominant in the Point section of the city, his grandfather having been Isaac Lawton, and his grandmother Mary ann Freeborn and his father Thomas R. Lawton. He was an exoert meat cutter and at one time conducted a butcher shop, later working in various markets about the city, in recent years he had worked for Dalton E. Young and his successors in nthe Beyer building on Thomas street. For many years he was a member of the choir of St. John's Church.
His wife, who was Miss Georgianna Hull, of this city died several years ago, and a son, a daughter and a brother Stephen B. Lawton have also died, so that was the last of his immediate family. His uncles are Mssers Edward N. Lawton and Francis M. Lawton and among his cousins are Chief Engineer Joseph S. Lawton, Representative Fletcher W. Lawton and Mr. Benjamin Lawton.
