  Newport Mercury October 29, 1927 Orville D. Dowler, a chauffeur for the Standard Wholesale Co., was drowned while gunning at Easton's Pond last Sunday morning, and a companion, Fred E. Sergerson, was rescued from a perilous position and hurried to the Hospital for emergency treatment. The two men were in a canoe in pursuit of birds, when their craft was overturned and they were thrown into the water. Weighted down by their heavy clothing, they found swimming impossible, but clung to the bulrushes for a time. Dowler finally decided to try for the embankment, but was unable to make the distance and sank to his death. Sergerson clung until a recue party arrived in a surf boat that was procured at the Beach and hurried across the the dam. The body of Dowler was recovered by a detail of firemen who had been summoned on a still alarm. Police and others assisted in the rescue. Dowler retired from the Navy a few months ago, and had since made his home on Van Zandt avenue. He is survived by a wife and two young children.
