Charles E. Thomas, 68, of 21 Third St., retired grocery store manager, died in a Providence hospital after a long illness. He was born in Portsmouth, the eldest son of George Bradford Thomas and Nettie Macomber Thomas. Mr. Thomas was for a number of years the postmaster in Portsmouth.
In 1922, he moved to Middletown. He and his father operated a grocery store on West Main Road. After his father's death, Mr. Thomas came to Newport and was manager of A&P and First National Stores here.
He was a member of Eureka Lodge of Masons in Portsmouth for 45 years, secretary of the Aquidneck Chapter for 23 years, and was a charter member of Eureka Eastern Star.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mary Brazil Thomas of Newport,; a son, Clifton E. Thomas of Millis, Mass.; a daughter, Mrs. Ava C. Miller of Springfield, Mass.; a brother, Frank J. Thomas of Largo, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Edna M. Thomas of Middletown and two great granddaughters.
