  Newport Mercury and Weekly News May 30, 1941 The body of Edgar Sherman, 71, was found Monday in his two room apartment on East Main road, just north of Union street, Portsmouth, about 9:45 o'clock by Police Chief Benjamin Phillips. Dr. Burton O. Storrs, medical examiner said death was caused by a self inflicted gunshot wound. He said the man had been dead about a week. The body was removed to the Hambly Funeral Home. Sherman, son of the late Frederick and Emily Sherman, had been missed for some time, and when Chief Phillips was notified he went to the house. It was locked, but he saw the body lying on the bedroom floor and broke open the door. He was the son of the late Frederick and Emily (Phillips) Sherman. Surviving are three nephews, Ernest L., Lester H. and Lloyd A. Sisson, and a niece, Mrs. Lillian Phillips.
