  Leader Times (Kittanning, PA) March 1, 2006 John W. Slagle, Sr., 83, of La Pine, Ore., died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, at his home. He was born Dec. 14, 1922, in Mosgrove to Merrell and Margaret (McCanna) Slagle. He was a retired captain of the Marine Corps, after serving for 25 years, from 1940 to 1965. He served in World War II and the Korean War. He was the recipient of many service awards including the Navy Cross (the nations second-highest medal), The Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat V, two Purple Hearts, the Silver Star, five Presidential Unit Citations, Combat Action Ribbon, three Korean Presidential Citations, and a Special Commendation from the President of Korea. After his retirement, he spent several years in California and then moved to Oregon in 1972, where he joined the local county Sheriffs Department, retiring from there in 1985. Survivors include two sons, John W. Slagle Jr. and wife Marilyn, of Anaheim, Calif., and Robert M. Slagle and wife Esther of Laguna Hills, Calif.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard Slagle of Broken Arrow, Okla.; three sisters, Betty Lindberg, of Clearwater, Fla., Marjorie Dunmire, of Manorville and Yula Bowser, of Manor Township; nephews; and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife Dorothy (Hedley) Slagle, who died Oct. 14, 1996.
