  The Plain Dealer, (Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio) May 4, 1994 Violette B. Apthorp accumulated more hours at Meridia Huron Hospital than any other volunteer in its history. She donated 24,000 hours over a 52-year period. It was known as Huron Road Hospital when she started her service there. Mrs. Apthorp, 92, died Sunday at the A.M. McGregor retirement home in East Cleveland. She was born in the suburb. She spent her summers in Madison. She graduated from Laurel School and from Beaver College in Pennsylvania. In 1923, she married Grant T. Apthorp, who worked in the East Cleveland city engineer's office. He later became finance manager and city manager. He died in 1973. When her husband enlisted in the Army during World War II, Mrs. Apthorp taught at Kirk Junior High School and Shaw High School in East Cleveland and in Shaker Heights schools. The Apthorps made their home on Glynn Dr. Mrs. Apthorp moved to the McGregor Home in September. Mrs. Apthorp is survived by sons, Grant B. of Madison, Thomas D. of Chardon and Barney T. of Thiensville, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
