Catherine Theresa "Terry" McDonough Walker, 77, died unexpectedly on Oct. 14, 2011. She was born Dec. 15, 1933, the daughter of Thomas and Mary McDonough of County Galway, Ireland.
Her parents came to the United States and settled in Pittsburgh, Pa. where Catherine was born and raised. She was a gracious, elegant, and spirited woman who never called attention to herself or to the philanthropic works she did.
Her life and happiness were grounded in her love for her husband, Barrett C. Walker, and their family.
Catherine was educated by the Sisters of Mercy in Pittsburgh at St. Agnes elementary school and Mount Mercy Academy, and after moving to Erie she continued her close relationship with the Sisters of Mercy of this region. She shared her husband's commitment to Mercyhurst College for the past 30 years and was a lifetime member of its Carpe Diem Society.
On Jan 1, 2000, she was honored by her husband and three sons at the dedication of the Catherine McDonough Walker Reading Room in the Hammermill Library of Mercyhurst College, and again in 2002 with the dedication of the Barrett and Catherine Walker Recital Hall. She encouraged her husband to establish The Walker School of Business at Mercyhurst, which he did in 1995. To celebrate her Irish heritage that was so much a part of Catherine's persona, her husband donated the Celtic Cross that crowns Hammermill Library as a permanent symbol of his love for her. Catherine will be remembered as a gentle woman, a devoted wife, a loving mother who was tremendously proud of the accomplishments of her sons, by daughters-in-law who held her in the highest esteem, and as a beloved grandmother whose memory will forever be held especially in seven tiny hearts.
In addition to her husband who she married on her birthday in 1977, she is survived by her sons Atty. Karl F. Frankovitch, Jr. (Loretta) of Lewiston, N.Y., Frank J. Frankovitch (Sian Currie) of Erie, and Mark F. Frankovitch (Zrinka) of Sausalito, Calif; seven Frankovitch grandchildren, Anna, Karl III, Eva, Isabelle, Oliver, and twins Karl and Mary; and two stepsons Barrett P. Walker (Peggy) of DeCatur, Ga., and Philip S. Walker of Orange Park, Fla.
She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Terezinha McDonough of Sparks, Nev., Arlene McDonough of McKeesport, Pa., and Palma McDonough of Avalon, Pa. and several nieces and nephews.
Catherine is preceded in death by her infant son John Frankovitch, her brothers Thomas, Michael and John McDonough, her sisters Margaret (McDonough) Ferguson and Mary (McDonough) Mann.
