The Reverend Dr. Robert S. Hough, 92, formerly of Charlotte, died Tuesday, May 6, 2003 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan where he had recently relocated to be near his son.
Dr. Hough was born March 31, 1911 to the late Reverend Robert Ervin Hough and Nannie Jane Roddey Hough at the site of the former manse of Chalmers Memorial ARP Church, where his father was pastor. He was a graduate of Columbia Theological Seminary in Atlanta where he received a degree in Theology and later earned a Doctorate of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary. Dr. Hough also received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Rhodes College and an honorary Doctorate of Law from Bristol Colleg
During his sixty-six-year ministry beginning in 1936, he served Presbyterian churches in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida before returning to Charlotte where he pastored East Presbyterian Church from 1970 to 1979, McGee Presbyterian Church from 1979 to 1989 and Westover Hills Presbyterian Church from 1990 until his retirement in 2002.
He was married February 14, 1939 to the former Mary Wacaster, whom he met in the first grade. She preceded him in death June 9, 1999. In 1945 Dr. and Mrs. Hough became the parents of Dr. Robert W. Hough who is a Professor of Religion at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.
