AUSTIN - William S. Woods, a former Texas newspaper editor, has died from Alzheimer's disease. He was 65.
Woods worked as city editor of the Austin American-Statesman from 1965-68 and was managing editor of the Midland-Reporter Telegram before becoming the first chief of public information services for the Texas Department of Welfare in 1969. He retired from the agency, now called the Texas Department of Human Services, in 1991.
Born in Galveston in 1929, Woods graduated from the University of Texas in 1950 and worked as a reporter for the American-Statesman and the Reporter-Telegram before serving as an Army first lieutenant during the Korean War.
Woods, who died Thursday in an nursing home, is widely credited with naming the river that runs through downtown Austin known as Town Lake.
