Elvera McCoy McGarvey, 89, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2005. Vera was born on August 29, 1915, in Galveston, Texas, to Elizabeth (Klem) Malone and John McCoy. She was a lifelong resident of Galveston county, having resided in Galveston, Hitchcock, La Marque, and Friendswood during her long and rich life. She grew up as member of First Lutheran Church in Galveston and was later a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Galveston, St. Michael?s Episcopal Church in La Marque, and St. Andrew?s Episcopal Church in Pearland.
After attending Alamo School and Ball High School, Vera began working at the ABC Bakery in Galveston before embarking upon a career in banking, working first at the old City National Bank and then at Moody National Bank from which she retired in the 1960?s. A licensed realtor, she and her husband owned and operated a real estate firm in Hitchcock. She also worked for many years in the Galveston County Tax Assessor?s Collector?s office from which she retired in the 1980?s. Despite having retired twice, she worked for several more years at the First State Bank of Hitchcock before finally deciding to enjoy retirement at last. In recent years, she resided at the Bedford Independent Senior Apartments in Friendswood.
In addition to working and raising a family, Vera also found time to pursue volunteer activities and to perform community service. During World War II, she was a volunteer for the British Allied Club. In Hitchcock, she was a founding member of the Greenwood Garden Club. In La Marque, she served as precinct judge during elections. She was also a gifted pianist and singer. When she was young, she and her brother entertained at Menard Park during summer programs and performed regularly on a local radio program. Vera?s ability to make and keep friends for a lifetime was remarkable. Even at the end of her life, she had a unique ability to find old friends and to make new friends no matter where she went.
Vera was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Ligon McGarvey; her infant son, Dennis Ligon McGarvey;her brother, Raymond McCoy; her sister, Anna Streeter; and her parents. She is survived by her adult children: her daughter, Patricia McGarvey Rosendahl, and husband, Torben; her son, William McGarvey, and wife, Genevieve, and her daughter, Kathleen McGarvey Jeffcoat; by ten grandchildren: James P. McGarvey, Shannon Jeffcoat, Melissa McGarvey Delzell, and husband, Wesley, Erik Rosendahl, James Jeffcoat, James J. McGarvey, Alicia Rosendahl, Jennifer Rosendahl, Stephen McGarvey, and Kate Rosendahl; and by three great-grandchildren: Marcus Delzell, Coy Jeffcoat, and Eris Jeffcoat; and by nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 27, 2005, at Grace Episcopal Church.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, James P. McGarvey, Erik Rosendahl, James Jeffcoat, James J. McGarvey, and Stephen McGarvey, and her son-in-law, Torben Rosendahl.
