Elizabeth Yvonne "Betty" Rosecrans Straughan, 87, of Central Avenue died at 1:50 p.m. Saturday, December 27, 2008, at her home.
She was born July 27, 1921, in Omaha, Neb., the daughter of the late Guy and Helen Turkington Rosecrans.
She was a 1939 Hillsboro High School graduate in Hillsboro, Ore., and attended Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., where she was a member and past president of Theta Nu Alpha sorority. She also was editor of Pacific Magazine and the campus newspaper, The Pacific University Index.
On April 13, 1943, she married Jerald D. Straughan in Forest Grove, Ore., and joined him at Hobbs, N.M., where he was stationed.
Betty had been a reporter and editor at the Hillsboro Argus newspaper, the Hobbs Daily News-Sun in Hobbs and the News Review in Roseburg, Ore., for 19 years.
She was active in writing speeches for the Chamber of Commerce First Citizen's Banquet, was past president of Newcomers Club and served on the Salvation Army advisory board for 20 years. She was a member of National and Oregon Press Women for 45 years, was a charter member of National Food Editors and Writers Association and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Roseburg.
In July 2002, Betty and Jerry moved to Columbus to be closer to their daughter, Julie Humphrey, and her family.
Mrs. Straughan is survived by her daughter, Julie (Jim) Humphrey of Columbus; a son, Jerald "Mike" (Joan) Straughan of Clackamas, Ore.; three grandchildren, Jenny (Harvey) Taylor, John (Shannon) Humphrey and Jeri Ann (John) Anderson, all of Columbus; three great-grandchildren, Blaine and Morgan Humphrey and Samuel Taylor, all of Columbus; two stepgrandchildren, Dawn Straughan and Jeremy Pasko, both of Portland, Ore.; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Emily and Terrence of Portland, Ore.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband March 11, 2006.
