ROCHESTER, ILLINOIS - John Edward Daly, 74, of Rochester died Saturday, March 7, 2009, at his home. John was born on September 15, 1934, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of John Patrick and Mary Agnew Daly. He married George Anne Porter on August 7, 1965, in Kansas City, Kansas.
John was educated at several universities, including the University of Illinois; he completed his studies with a doctorate in history from the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the staff of the Philadelphia City Archives in 1963 and held the post of Assistant City Archivist for several years. In 1974 he was appointed to the position of Director of the Illinois State Archives, from which he retired in 2004. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Abraham Lincoln Association, the Society of American Archivists (Fellow), the Illinois State Genealogical Society, the Sangamon County Historical Society and the adjunct faculty of the Department of History at the University of Illinois Springfield.
John is survived by his wife, George Anne Porter Daly and a sister, Marilyn K. Carter (husband, George I.) of Jamison, Pennsylvania.

John Edward Daly, who had retired as the Illinois State Archives director in July 2004 after 30 years of service, died March 7 at his home in Rochester. His archives activities made record-searching in Illinois more accessible to genealogists and historians and a model for other states to follow.
During his career as director he had organized the Illinois Regional Archives Depository System, established a records management system for Chicago and Cook County records, oversaw the development of a new state records center, created the Illinois State Archives Advisory Board and the Illinois State Historical Records Board, created and later updated the "Descriptive Inventory of the Archives of the State of Illinois," and helped make archives information available online.
Daly was educated at several universities, including the University of Illinois. He completed his studies with a doctorate in history from the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the staff of the Philadelphia City archives in 1963 and held the post of assistant city archivist for several years.
He was a member of the board of directors of the Abraham Lincoln Association, the Society of American Archivists (Fellow), the Illinois State Genealogical Society, the Sangamon County Historical Society and the adjunct faculty of the Department of History at the University of Illinois-Springfield.
He had been honored last year by the Illinois State Archives by having the conference room in the Margaret Cross Norton Building renamed the John Daly Conference Room. He had received several awards during his tenure as archivist, including those from the Federation of Genealogical Societies and the Illinois State Genealogical Society. He had been a special friend to genealogists.
He is survived by his wife, George Ann Porter Daly, and a sister, Marilyn K. Carter (Mrs. George), of Jamison, Pa.
