ROY A. BERGSTROM, 80, of Burschette Road, Tampa, Fla., and formerly of Cranston, a retired developer, died at home on Jan. 28 after a short illness.
He was the husband of Thelma (Barrett) Bergstrom. They had been married for 43 years. Born in Providence, a son of the late Carl and Edla (Soderman) Bergstrom, he had lived in Cranston until moving to Portland, Conn., in the 1960s. He moved to Tampa in 1987.
Mr. Bergstrom had been a developer of custom homes in Connecticut for many years, until he retired. He also had worked for General Dynamics during the construction of the first nuclear submarine, the NAUTILUS. A Navy veteran of World War II, serving from 1942 to 1948, he took part in the naval Antarctic expedition "Operation Highjump," with Adm. Richard E. Byrd. Mr. Bergstrom was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Judith Caminiti of Tampa; a son, David Godwin of Middletown, Conn.; a sister, Edith Hatfield of Cranston; two grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Carl Bergstrom Jr.
Burial, with full military honors, was on Feb. 3 in the Veterans Cemetery in Tampa.
