WHITEHALL, Wis, (Special) - Charles M. Briggs, 67, died at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Whitehall Community Hospital where he had been a patient following a heart attack at his home Thursday evening.
Mr. Briggs was employed by the Brakebush Co., Westfield. He hauled eggs in this area for the firm and had been out on his route as usual Thursday. However he had been afflicted with a heart ailment a few years ago.
Burial will be in Lincoln cemetery here.
Mr. Briggs was born Sept. 13, 1893 near Holmen, La Crosse county, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Briggs. He moved with his parents to a farm in the town of Hale, Trempealeau county. In 1909 the family moved to Lakes Coulee near Blair.
At the age of 17 he began hauling cream to the Whitehall Creamery on one of two routes established by his father. He continued the work until 1919. He was patrolman for the Trempealeau County highway department four years. Then for about six years he was foreman of a highway department construction crew and also worked in the county shop at Arcadia.
For several years prior to establishing his own milk route in 1941 he worked for Briggs Transportation Co. He sold his milk route in 1954, then hauled eggs and did odd jobs.
On Feb. 5, he married Hazel Back. They resided in the town of Piesons until moving to Whitehall about 1921.
Mrs, Briggs survives, together with three daughters, Mrs. Paul (Margaret) Johnson, rural Osseo; Mrs. Carl (Berniece) Wanquist, Minneapolis, and Mrs. Robert (Phyllis) Paine, Dubuque, Iowa; eight grandchildren; five brothers, Herman. Willis, Wilbur, and Clarence, Whitehall and Almond, Blair., and three sisters, Mrs. Elmer (Lulu) Hilleque, Westby, and Mrs. Iver (Emma) Berg, and Mrs. Arthur (Essie) Knutson, Blair, two sisters died in childhood.
