WHITEHALL, Wis. — Alton E. "Tony" Berg, 84, of Whitehall died Friday, July 11, 2003, in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. Tony was born on April 9, 1919, in Blair, Wis., to Iver and Emma (Briggs) Berg. He married Charlotte Lambach on Dec. 15, 1940, in Decorah, Iowa. Tony served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946 when he was wounded in Luzon, Philippines.
Tony was employed with Briggs Transfer and owned and operated the Mobile Oil Gas Station in Whitehall. Tony served as the Whitehall city clerk and treasurer for 23 years prior to his retirement. Tony was a member of the Moen-Hamilton VFW Post 8288.
Tony is survived by his wife, Charlotte; a daughter, Rebecca Taylor of Whitehall; two sons, Frederick (Pat) Berg of Janesville, Wis., and Steven (Cyndi) Berg of Spring, Texas; three grandchildren, Lauri (Mike) Knapton, and Aaron and Ashley Berg; a great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Knapton; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Tony was preceded in death by two brothers, Landis and Ronald Berg, and a grandson, Mark Alton Berg.
