  Black Hills Pioneer (Spearfish, SD) March 22, 2011 David Wesley Malvin, 85, of Spearfish passed away Saturday, March 19, 2011 at his home. He was born Aug. 8, 1925 in Belle Fourche to Carroll and Margaret (Small) Malvin. He graduated from Belle Fourche High School in 1943. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 and under the auspices of the Navy he attended college at the University of Kansas. He attended college at the University of Texas and received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering in 1946. David married Joan Munn in 1948 and to this union a daughter, Carol was born. In 1955, he graduated from engineering school in New York with a bachelor degree in civil engineering. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1959 and at that time they moved to California. After a short time in California, they moved to Hawaii where he worked for the government. While in Hawaii, he designed and helped build an Episcopal Church. Following his daughter Carol's untimely death, they moved to Carpenteria, Calif., and shortly following, his wife Joan passed away. He continued traveling the United States and would often return to Belle Fourche where he enjoyed playing drums in the Cowboy Band. David married Lois Widdoss in 1997 and they continued living in the Black Hills. He was a very talented and educated man and was very proud of the antique car he restored. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge while in California and was a member of the Belle Fourche Cowboy Band. He enjoyed reading books and loved to travel. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Lois Malvin of Spearfish; and stepchildren, Ann Erickson of Garwin, Iowa, Robert Widdoss of Belle Fourche, Margo Carnahan of Chadron, Neb., Alan Widdoss of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Dee Zarmbinski of San Antonio, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Carol Lynn Jensen; and his first wife, Joan.
