Verner Dale Sanders, a well known Seaside resident and businessman, died Monday, Dec. 19, in Seaside, He was 85. The only son of Willard and Jennie Stafford Sanders, Mr. Sanders was born on July 6, 1903 in a sod house, on the Rosebud Indian Reservation six miles south of Geddes in Charles Mix County, S.D., where his parents had homesteaded after the reservation was advertised as free land for the claiming. The family came to Oregon in 1922 and Mr. Samders' father later became mayor of Milwaukie.
After graduating from Benson Polyyechnic High School in 1921 and from the Behnke-Walker Business School in Portland he became head bookkeeper and later was manager of a large seafood packing business on Killisnoo Island, Alaska. After returning to the Portland area, he built two houses and owned several businesses, including a grocery store and several service stations.
He married Thelma A. Micheltree on March 21, 1925, in Mitchell, S.D. She survives. Mr. Sanders served as municipal judge in Seaside from 1956 to 1961 and owned the Signal Oil distributorship in Clatsop county from 1935 until 1955. After selling the oil business he purchased the Plymouth-Dodge auto dealership at 601 S. Roosevelt Drive in Seaside and operated it for 14 years as the Dale Sanders Car Co.
Mr. Sanders had served for five years on the Seaside Planning Commision and 10 years on the board of directors of Seaside General Hospital. After Sanders was instrumental in forming the Seaside Rural Fire Protection District and serving as the district's president for 10 years, the mayor of Gearhart asked for help in forming the Gearhart Rural Fire Protection District.
Mr. Sanders and his wife were well known as gardeners, and the flower beds at the Indian Way residence overlooking the Necanicum River in Seaside became so popular that it was necessary to install a parking area yo accomodate visitors. They regularly donated flowers to the Seaside First Baptist Church where they had been founding members.
Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Arlene, Seaside; a son, Lyle Sanders, Stayton; four grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
