  The Grand Island Independent (NE) February 9, 2016 Verla C. Bachman, 90, of Grand Island, formerly of Giltner, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016, at Primrose Retirement Center. Mrs. Bachman was born on May 16, 1925, at Giltner the daughter of Otto and Bessie (Detamore) Hunnicutt. Survivors include her children and their spouses, Doug and Kathy Bachman of Giltner, Denis and Catherine Bachman of Giltner and Peggy and Phil Smith of Aurora; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Lavonne Ediger of Aurora, Betty and Bob Ranard of Grand Island and Marleen and Marvin Caspersen of Boelus; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Hunnicutt of Grand Island and Viola Dolan of Long Beach, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Harvey Bish of Aurora; her grandchildren and their spouses, Misty and Kevin Muff, Krystal and Scott Siebrandt, Lance and Ashley Bachman, Trisha and Zachary VanDiest, Sarah Bachman, Michael and Jamie Bachman, Kacie and Jason Highsmith, Kylee and Anthony Hudson and Tyler Smith; and great-grandchildren, Karlie and Tanner Muff, Kenzie and Camden Siebrandt, Landon Bachman, Benjamin, Lauryn and Olivia VanDiest, Jacob and Emily Bachman, Carter, Coleman, Cooper and Kerrison Highsmith and Sawyer, Lyla and Penelope Hudson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl, who died June 17, 1994; a sister, Virginia Bish; three brothers, Eldon, Gerald and Loren Hunnicutt; two sisters-in-law, Louise and Doris Hunnicutt; and two brothers-in-law, Keith Ernst and Ed Ediger. Verla attended all eight grades at a Mount Hope country school. She graduated from Giltner High School in 1942. She spent summers at Kearney State College and taught seven years in country school and substituted at Giltner Elementary. She was united in marriage to Earl Bachman on Feb. 21, 1950. Along with being a teacher, she raised her family and was a farmer's wife. She was a member of the Giltner United Methodist Church, Circle and Extension Club. She enjoyed quilting, having made a quilt for each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved poetry.
