- Bill graduated in absencia from HS when his father entered the Army in 1942. In February 1943, still just 16, Bill worked as a CAF-2 in the Pentagon. He enlisted in the Army Reserve on 27 Jul 1943 and was ordered to the Army Specialized Training (Reserve) Program at the University of Kentucky, then transferred to Purdue. After basic infantry training at Camp Robinson, AR, Bill returned to ASTP at Penn State. In 1945 he was recruited for the Special Engineer Detachment, Manhattan Project, at Oak Ridge, TN, where he worked as an Electrical Engineer in the K-25 plant. After the war ended he became Asst First Sgt of the SED, then moved to Project Headquarters in Washington, DC, where he served in the Intelligence Section. He participated in Operations Crossroads, transporting nuclear material from Los Alamos, NM to Kwajelein on the USS O'Brien, then served on the assembly ship, USS Albemarle.
Bill was discharged in Sep 1946 as a S/Sgt, married, and entered Ohio State University, where he enrolled in ROTC. Selected as a Distinguished Military Graduate and receiving a BEE, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the US Army Signal Corps in 1948. After schools at Ft Riley, KS and Ft Monmouth, NJ he was assigned to Heidelberg, Germany for three years. He then returned to the Univ of Michigan where he received the degree of MSE (Electornics). Military assignments included the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project at Sandia, NM and Kileen, TX, two tours in OCSigO at the Pentagon, the US Army Mission to Ecuador, Assoc Professor of Electricity at West Point, CO 54th Sig Bn in Viet Nam, Office, Chief of Staff, Army, and Commander, Pacific Area, Defense Communications Agency. His schools include Signal Basic and Advance Officer Courses, Army Command and General Staff, Inter-American Defense College, Parachute School, Aviation (Helicopter) School.
After retirement in 1975, Bill worked for the National Academy of Sciences, Computer Sciences Corp, Calculon Corp, and the MITRE Corporation, and obtained the degree of MS (Mgmt Sci) from American Univ. He retired from MITRE in 1992.
