Bernard W. "Bernie" Ernst, 80, of 915 Biddle Road, Galion, died unexpectedly Thursday evening, December 1, 2005 at home.
Born April 21, 1925 in Galion, he was the son of the late Clem Ernst and Melinda Boehm Ernst. He is survived by his wife Nancy A. Myers Ernst whom he married December 28, 1946.
He was a graduate of Galion High School in 1943 and was a World War II U. S. Navy veteran.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church; a life member of American Legion Scarbrough Post 243, a member of Galion Elks Lodge 1191 and Polk Township AMVETS Post 1979. While in high school, he started Galion High School's first Golf team. He played semi-pro football, first for the Galion team and when that team disbanded, he played for the Bucyrus Hornets.
He did many things throughout his working life. He owned a pool hall, owned and operated three bars at different times which were Bernie's Tavern, Bernie's Place and Market Street Tavern, he owned Bernie's Market, which was a Galion grocery store and worked for Crawford Construction. He then worked and retired from the former Perfection-Cobey Co. where he was a machinist. After his retirement he and his wife lived and worked in Columbus, where he was a rent manager at Fitzroy Apartments.
Surviving are his three daughters and sons-in-law, Jenny and James Lamb of Charlotte, Mich., Penny and Steve Truitt of Columbus and Mary and John Dioguardi of Athens; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul T. and Donna Ernst of Newbury; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Jim Ernst and a sister, Dorothy Parris.
