LAKE WYLIE Kenneth Leon Shaffer, 84, of Lake Wylie, S.C., passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013. He was born on June 9, 1928, to the late Kenneth and Margaret Shaffer in Decatur, Ill.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters, Georgia Hinton and Peggy Butcher.
He obtained his Bachelor's degree in Engineering from Washington University and his MBA from New York University.
Kenneth was a Korean War U.S. Army veteran. After his military service, he had a very distinguished 38 year career with Lord & Taylor Department Store, rising to Senior VP in charge of all design, construction and maintenance for all Lord & Taylor stores in the United States.
After his retirement, he and his wife, Sandy, moved from New York City to the River Hills community. There he joined the River Hills Lions Club, where he contributed thousands of hours of service, including building the River Hills community phone directory into the preeminent fund raising program for the Lions and earned the Melvin Jones award as well as most valuable Lion of the Year award. He had a particular passion for mentoring young people.
Kenneth was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, a kind and caring person who enjoyed problem solving, inventing, traveling and volunteering. He will be sorely missed for his intelligence, his quick wit, his youthful optimism and positive thinking.
Survivors include his spouse of 32 years, Sandra McHone Shaffer of Lake Wylie; three daughters, Karen Cunningham (Mark) of Neptune N.J., Christina Reiriz of Fort Mill, S.C., and Theresa Wethington of Greeley, Colo.; two sons, Gary Shaffer of Fairburn, Ga., and Kevin Shaffer of Rock Hill, S.C.; and eight grandchildren, Travis Conomos of Neptune, N.J., Tony Reiriz of Charlotte, N.C., Lance Corporal Tyler Reiriz of Parris Island, S.C., Jesse Reiriz of Charleston, S.C., Kristen Shaffer of Charleston, S.C., Kenneth Shaffer of New York City and Andrew and Ryan Wethington of Greeley, Colo.
