ATTLEBORO -- David E. Clarke, 74, an electrical engineer, and holder of several patent designs, died Sunday in Sturdy Memorial Hospital, Attleboro. He was the husband of Lucy (Morley) Clarke, to whom he had been married 39 years.
Born in Attleboro on Feb. 10, 1930, he was the son of the late Dr. Elmer Clarke and Miriam (Blanchard) Buchanan. He had been raised in Norton and had attended Norton schools. He had resided in Attleboro for 39 year
Mr. Clarke had worked for Texas Instruments in Attleboro for 20 years until retiring. He held many U.S. patents in circuit breaker design, some of which were used on the Apollo space missions. In all, he held over 20 patent designs. Mr. Clarke was an avid sailor and a member of the U.S. Power Squadron of Attleboro. He had spent many summers exploring Narragansett Bay with his family on his sailboat, "The Lucy Hayes." He was a member of, and had served on the board of directors of the Rhode island Muzzle Loaders club of Rehoboth, and was a member of the National Rifle Association. He had also enjoyed woodworking.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Daniel and Michael Clarke, both of Norton, and David Clarke of North Scituate, R.I.; a daughter, Debra Kennedy of Norton; a brother, William Clarke of Plainville; a sister, Miriam Vincent of Cranston, R.I.; six grandchildren; a great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
