  The Idaho Statesman (Boise, ID) July 16, 2015 Bertrice Afton Allen Maucotel was born on February 4, 1918 in Labelle, Idaho to Ellen Marie Nilsen and James Cyrus Allen, the fifth of six children. She peacefully passed away at her daughter Sue's home on July 15, 2015 in Caldwell, Idaho. She was 97 years old. Afton grew up on the family farm in Labelle and later in Hyrum, Utah. After Afton received her education in Hyrum, she worked as a switchboard operator at Douglas Aircraft Company in southern California during World War II, where she met the love of her life, Joseph A. Maucotel. They were married in California on October 25, 1947. Joe joined the LDS church in 1952 and they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan Utah LDS Temple in 1953. Afton was a homemaker and an active and faithful member of the LDS church, serving in numerous ward and stake callings over the years. She loved music, singing, and dancing and she made sure her children grew up loving music as well. This legacy of music now spans four generations and will forever be cherished by future generations. She was a great cook and loved to entertain in her home. She was famous for her delicious pies, sweet pickles, and homemade bread and was fondly known as the pickle/pie lady. Afton always loved gardening and shared jars and jars of home canned goodness with family and friends. She leaves a legacy of love, faith, devotion, fortitude, humor, service, patience, and especially the example of enduring well. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, and her husband of 60 years. She leaves behind four children, Michele (Ronald) Taylor of Eagle, Idaho; Steven (Joyce) Maucotel of Moab, Utah; Susan (Steven) Meyers, of Caldwell, Idaho; and Mark (Audrey) Maucotel, of Kent, Washington; plus 16 beloved grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
