  The Herald Journal (Logan, UT) June 7, 2017 Eldon Jay Nielsen passed away from this life peacefully Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at his home surrounded by his family. In his words, he "lived a good life" and was very blessed to have almost 93 years of wonderful experiences. He was born July 24, 1924, the son of Albert and Esther Allen Nielsen, with siblings Ross (Louise), Iris Hill (Frank), Errol, Mark (Rea), Muriel Johnson (Wallace) and Diane Frank (Arden). Eldon was raised on a small dairy farm in Hyrum, Utah "on the road to Paradise," which meant a lot of hard work but strong family ties. He was a senior in high school when Pearl Harbor was bombed, and proudly served his country completing a 2-year tour with the U.S. Navy on the battleship USS Tennessee. Dad recognized the hand of the Lord many times in preserving his life during those years and he taught us by example what patriotism, service and dedication really is. After returning from the war, Eldon married Elna Maughan Leishman Nielsen on June 28, 1946, in the Logan LDS Temple for time and all eternity. They were blessed with six children: Kent Jay (wife Louise Nelson), Dale Leishman (wife Jody Lawerence), Dallas Kae (wife Julienne Fowler), Gardell, Janese (husband Alan Nielsen) and Bonita (husband Dan Richins). Together they raised their family, along with a few dairy cows for 52 years and several garden harvests. After retirement, Dad and Mom moved to the big city of Hyrum. Dad taught us about hard work, humility, service and compassion and love. He loving cared for Mom until she passed away in 2010. An example of truly enduring to the end, he loved visiting, telling stories and jokes, helping anyone in need, sharing from his garden, and was always willing to go for a ride in the mountains. He showed us through his example of his love for the Savior and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He is survived by his children Kent, Dale, Dallas, Janese and Bonita; 24 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren with a few more and a great-great grandchild on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Ross, Errol, Iris, Mark and Diane, his wife Elna, a son Gardell, a granddaughter Amy, a grandson Jeffrey, and a great-grandson Brendan.
