  The Herald Journal (Logan, UT) April 25, 1999 Mary Jean Hess Hammond, 77, passed away April 23, 1999, at the Sunshine Terrace surrounded by her loved ones. She was born Oct. 4, 1921, in Logan, Utah, to Francis DeVerl and Ruby Allen Hess. She married Seymour Baer Hammond Nov. 8, 1939, in Brigham City, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. Mom was a great cook. When she cooked, everyone around her benefited. She wasn't good at making "small" portions of anything. We would never leave her home without some of Mom's good cooking. She cooked for many years at the American Legion and Forty and Eight. Mom was an excellent seamstress. She was a great support to her family. There wasn't anything she wouldn't do for us and her grandkids. She worked with Dad "the candy man" for many years in the family candy wholesale business. She is survived by three daughters and one son, Sandra (Larry) Adams, Providence, Ronald (Susan), Logan, Shauna (Dale) Coburn, Logan, Cindy (Troy) Nielsen, College Ward; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, son Bruce, son-in-law Dennis Taylor and one sister. For the past year she has been a member of the Sunshine Terrace Branch. Prior to that she was a member of the Logan 15th Ward. She served as a counselor in the Relief Society, a librarian and a visiting teacher. Mom loved to attend the temple. While her health was good, she attended two sessions every day for over a year.
