William Henry (Bill) Long, 89, of Ferrysburg, formerly of Grand Haven, died Tuesday, August 2nd, 2005. He was born May 25, 1916 to Rev. William and Mildred (Haskell) Long in Brooklyn, Michigan. He married Helen Cawood in1943 in Battle Creek, Michigan. She preceded him in death June 14, 2004.
Childhood visits with his Uncle, Dr. Charles Long, of Grand Haven, drew him to this area where he and his family have resided since 1951. Mr. Long was employed by Keller Tool Co. which became Gardner Denver Co. and he retired from Cooper Industries in 1981 after 31 years.
He was a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Army in Chile and Panama and was part of the Coastal Artillery for both the East and West Coasts and the New York Harbor Defense.
He was an active member of the Grand Haven First Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and Sunday School teacher.
He enjoyed golf, gardening and his workshop. He also spent many hours volunteering at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum.
Bill mad friends wherever he went and was a joy to those who knew him.
Survivors include his daughters, Suzanne (Joe) Edwards and Sandra (Hugh) Broersma both of Grand Haven; 5 grandchildren: Eric Edwards, Kirk (Roberta) Edwards, and Courtney (Gregory) Ransford all of Grand Haven; Lindsay (Daniel) Pinxt of Melbourne, Australia; Ashley Broersma of Grand Rapids; a sister Mary Helen Stone, Sarasota, Florida; as well as other extended family. He was preceded in death by brothers, George and Edward Long, sister Francis Bloom and grandson Jacob Broersma.
